Beer has a very old tradition. In Ancient Rome it ranked amongst the groceries for daily use. They called it “Cervisia”, named after Ceres, the Goddess of agriculture. In the Middle Ages, brewing beer was common in monasteries.
Beer was mainly germ-free due to the boiling of the hops – in contrast to the drinking water at the time. Because of its high nutritional value, it was an important addition to the often scarce, unbalanced diet. On average, around 20% of wages was spent on beer at the time.
